Mi–SPACE CREATING COMMUNITITES IN ST IVES

( Last Updated: 29-04-2009 )

Mi-space, part of the Midas Group, is bringing affordable housing to St Ives on behalf of Coastline Housing.

This scheme is being partially funded by the Homes and Communities Agency and Penwith District Council.

The £3.5m project comprises 33 affordable homes which are a mixture of two and three bedrooms and two four bedroomed houses.  The homes are situated in Consols in St Ives and will provide much needed affordable housing in the area.

St Ives has one of the most pressing affordable housing requirements in the UK due to numerous factors; these include a high level of second home ownership and a large gap between average earnings and property values.

All of the homes will be built to eco-homes ‘very good' standards, and have been designed to blend in with the local landscape.  The site has revealed some mining features which relate to the extensive tin and copper mining that previously took place in the area.  Tin mining in particular has been prevalent in the area for the last 2,000 years.  The Mi-space team will be reusing the excavated rock from the site where possible to reduce the amount of site traffic and the environmental impact on the area.

Andrew Johnson, Executive Director, Mi-space, said:

"We are delighted to be involved with bringing much needed affordable housing to St Ives.  These homes will help local people have the opportunity to live in their own town and stay close to their families where they grew up".

Laura Haynes, Head of Development at Coastline Housing, said:

"While 21 of the properties will be rented out at an affordable rate to people on the housing waiting list, the remaining 12 will be offered as shared-ownership (part buy, part rent) properties, for people looking to get a foot on the housing ladder.   Part buy, part rent involves buying a share of a property and paying an affordable rent for the rest. The cost of the rent and mortgage added together will be less than a home-owner would pay for a mortgage on the whole of a property.

We are delighted to be offering local people a chance to get their foot on the housing ladder in St Ives, a town which has become prohibitively expensive for many young people looking to buy a home of their own."

The Mi-space team has been on site since last summer and aims to complete the build during the summer of this year. Mi-space is the affordable housing company with the Midas Group, the South West's largest privately owned construction company.
